One of history’s most important objects, the Cyrus Cylinder dates to the sixth century BCE, when the Persian king Cyrus the Great took Babylon. Within the cylinder’s inscription is the king’s declaration of religious freedom for his newly conquered people, a philosophy that has inspired generations of rulers.
On loan from the British Museum, this remarkable object makes its US debut at the Sackler, shown with other key items that offer insight into Cyrus’ vast and powerful Achaemenid Empire (550–331 BCE).
