In-Conversation with Shirin Neshat: Arts and Artists in Iran and the Iranian Diaspora
Shirin Neshat was born in 1957 in Qazvin, Iran. Although she lives and works in New York, her artwork explores issues of her native society, Iran, especially the position of women. She uses the specifics of her background culture to create works that communicate universal ideas about loss, meaning and memory. In this session Ms. Neshat will speak about her experience as an Iranian artist residing in New York. After the presentation a panel of UMD faculty and experts in the Art Department and in Persian Studies will engage the artist in questions and answers before opening the forum to questions from the audience.
Ms. Neshat is Artist in Residence at the University of Maryland's College of Arts and Humanities for Spring semester 2009. The position means she will be discussing her art and arts-related issues of mutual interest with interested faculty and students in the College. She will also give two public presentations at the University over the semester of her residence.
