Photography from across the Muslim world (including Iran), showing Muslim diversity, breaking down the monolith. Derek has had exhibits in the UK, New York City and Hong Kong (including a photo exhibit exclusively on Iran, in Manhattan).
"Imagining the Muslim World"
In light of the responses to the Lower Manhattan controversy, we invite you to experience a broader view of what it is to be "Muslim." Derek is opening up the first DC installment of his photo exhibit, showcasing a kaleidoscope of portraits and images he captured traveling throughout the Muslim world in March 2008 through August 2010.
Derek, then a New York based travel photographer, started with Indi...a then weaving through dozens of Muslim countries and regions, including Syria, Iran , Central Asia, the Gulf, Pakistan, western China, Indonesia, Egypt, Bosnia, Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, and Morocco. Roaming the Silk Road and discovering Muslim quarters, Derek discovered the common thread: warmth, graciousness, hospitality and sincere interest bestowed upon him by Muslim strangers, almost regardless of nationality. Image after image, Derek captured the essence of what he viewed as ‘Muslim.’
"These are not 'rare and precious' peeks into the Muslim world. Not to anyone but me. These are any day. Everyday. Right now. Come see some of the things I saw, then go see for yourself."
Please join us for a colorful evening with friends and experience Derek’s photographs firsthand.
The event is open to the public.
