Western stereotypes about women in the Muslim world, and Iran in particular, tend to view the role of women in society as categorically negative. Such stereotypes feed those who support the wars in the region since the Muslim world is perceived as backward and in need of civilization and liberation of women. This was clearly the case when the war in Afghanistan was marketed in America as a necessary step for the liberation of Afghan women. Muslim women are often perceived as passive victims of religious fundamentalism and in need of Western saviors. This photo exhibition, prepared by Kowsar Gowhari and sponsored by Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute and Center for Persian Studies at University of Maryland, provides an alternative to the stereotypes and shows active Iranian women in different cultural, social, political and economic spheres. These photos are a window into the world of Iranian women and illustrate how millions of Iranian women have renegotiated their public presence and continue to be highly engaged in all aspects of social life.
