Hill Center is thrilled to welcome Amir Vahab & Ensemble as part of our Global Sounds series for an evening of Sufi love songs. Dounouya (DOON-EE-YA) is the West African word for “The Whole World.” This series of singular concerts, curated and hosted by Jim Thomson, features musicians at the forefront of the global music scene. Thompson will facilitate a brief conversation with the artist.
A Persian classical music virtuoso, Amir Vahab has been called an "ambassador for a silenced music" by the New York Times. Vahab is one of New York's most celebrated and distinguished composers/vocalists of Sufi music. The concert includes songs selected from the poetry of the great Sufi masters Rumi, Hafez, Yunus and Baba Taher and features classic instruments Ney (reed flute), Tar (long-necked lute), Oud (short-necked lute), Tanbour (ancient sacred lute), Saz (seven-string long-necked lute), Daf (large frame drum associated with Sufi rituals) and Tombak (Persian goblet drum).
The Ensemble was formed in 1981 to perform both the mystical music of the Sufis and the folkloric music of different regions of Iran and Turkey.
