Part of Vancouver International Jazz Festival
from June 25 – July 4, 2010.
“[Niyaz is] an alluring combination of medieval Persian and Indian exoticism and beats that are state of the art. Ali’s vocals are wholly evocative of another world and another time, which creates a wonderful tension with Torkian and Rizzo’s inspired instrumental textures.”— Billboard
Niyaz is an acoustic-electronic project, which brings together three prominent musical figures—Vas vocalist Azam Ali, Axiom of Choice’s multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian, and producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo (Khaled, Seal, Cirque Du Soleil)—to form an exciting new fusion of traditional Persian music and trance electronica. These three masters have all experienced success on their own and have found a new common ground in Niyaz; the mystical poetry of Urdu and Persian Sufi poets of the fourteenth and fifteenth century form the lyrical framework for a fresh new musical adventure. The trio’s first eponymous release (Six Degrees) is a hypnotic, ecstatic, and eminently danceable album of both traditional world music and electronic music. Their latest release, Nine Heavens, consolidates Niyaz’s reputation as pioneers of a twenty-first century global trance tradition. Their last Festival performance sold out so don’t miss this one! With Naser Musa Janini oud, Jess Stroup guitar/keys, Salar Nader tablas.
