Welcome to Toronto's Official Chahar'Shanbeh Suri Party, presented by the largest network of promoters, Universities and DJs in the city.
Often referred to as the Persian Fire Festival, the origin of Chahar’Shanbeh Soori (Red Wednesday) dates back to at least 2000+ years, to the early Zoroastrian era. Ancient Persians celebrated the last five days of the year in honor of the spirits of the dead. They believed that the spirits of the dead would come for reunion and was considered highly unlucky to stay at home. On the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, literally the eve of Red Wednesday or the eve of celebration, bonfires are lit in public places with the help of fire and light, it is hoped for enlightenment and happiness throughout the coming year. People leap over the flames, shouting:
(Sorkhi-e to az man) Give me your beautiful red colour
(Zardi-e man az to) And take back my sickly pallor!
~ (FUN FACT: Chahar in Persian is the number 4, Chahar’Shanbeh is the fourth day of the Persian week, being Wednesday)
