Abstract:
Two finite element models were used to study indentation gonioscopy, in which the sclera and/or cornea are indented by pressing on them with a specialized lens, causing opening of the angle between the iris and cornea. Two cases were considered based on a published experimental study, large eye cup (covering the entire cornea and part of sclera) and small eye cup (covering only part of the cornea). The outcomes of the model are consistent with the clinical observation that the large-cup and small-cup cases gave opposite results. An experimental setup was also designed to measure mechanical properties of the porcine lens capsule using osmotic pressure as the driving force. The porcine lens was submerged in the hypotonic saline solutions and the swelling of the lens was measured with time. A simple mechanical model was developed and fitting the model solution to data provided an estimate of the elastic modulus of the lens capsule.
