Dr. Mahdavi teaches Medical Anthropology and Social Anthropology at Pomona College . She has received her Masters in International Affairs (MIA), Master of Arts and PhD from Columbia University in New York City . As part of her research for her book Passionate Uprisings, Iran's Sexual Revolution, Mahdavi visited Iran over a period of seven years, starting in 2000.
In this presentation she focuses on the changing conceptions of risk for urban Iranian women in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Although HIV and STI rates are rising in Iran , especially amongst heterosexual women, many women are more afraid of the social risks of sexual activity than the viral risks of diseases such as HIV due to women’s marginalized status.
