Building on the success of The Seattle-Havana Poster Show (2007-2008), curator Daniel R. Smith has gone half way around the world to unite the graphic design communities of Seattle and Tehran. The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show debuts at Bumbershoot, Seattle's Music and Arts Festival. Artists included range from Reza Abedini, a powerful figure in contemporary Iranian graphic design, to younger talents born since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. These Iranian designers' posters are paired with the work of Seattle designers, such as Robynne Raye of Modern Dog, Coby Schultz and Barry Ament of the Ames Bros and many more.
Daniel R. Smith is a Seattle-based artist and designer who has worked as a graphic designer and art director for firms including NBBJ Architecture, Starbucks Coffee and Experience Music Project. Mamoun Sakkal is an internationally recognized graphic designer, architect, artist and teacher who has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
Seattle-Tehran Poster Show will be at Bumbershoot, Seattle's Music and Arts Festival. Bumbershoot, as the name implies, umbrellas a number of artists from different genres representing the best in music, film, comedy, theater, spoken word, dance, visual, performance and literary arts. Originally funded by the city of Seattle, the year 1971 marked the beginning of the Bumbershoot tradition, known then as The Seattle Arts Festival. With over 20 indoor/outdoor venues, a wide variety of festival cuisine and a diverse collection of indie retail vendors, Bumbershoot embodies an eclectic mix of artists that has inspired summer festival-goers for nearly four decades!
