Naser Sheikhzadegan was born into an Azari family in Tehran and remembers his childhood being surrounded with the art music of both of these great musical traditions. He spent his early years exploring the fascinating world of music and self-teaching Oud and other instruments. This blind passion only turned into a sense of a grounded and long-lasting relationship when he got the chance to study with the great masters of Classical Iranian music while living in the U.S. -- great artists and teachers like Ostad Mahmoud Zolfonoun, Olstad Mohammad Reza Lotfi and Ostad Hossein Alizadeh to whom he feels that he owes it all. At this point, all Naser wants to be able to do is to touch or inspire another soul with the soulful music of his homeland; just as others did to him.
Ghazal Fayli was born in Iran, Ghazal has studied with many different persian vocalist and is an accomplished singer. In addition to music, she has studied architecture. While a student at the school of art, she began learning radife avaz or the collection of Persian suits organized by scale and melody type that form the basis for improvisation under supervision of master Persian artists. At the same time she started learning setar with Mohammed Reza Ibrahimi. Her passion towards learning Persian music and singing in particular opened doors to extremely valuable teaching sessions with a number of masters such as Ostad Hossein Alizadeh, Mohammed Reza Lotfi, Mohsen Keramati, Asghar Shahzeidi and Narbeh Cholakiyam and at last into the first grade students of Mohammed Reza Shajarian.
Amir H. Nojan, was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1980. In college, he studied “graphic design”, but his passion since childhood has always been music. At the age of 12, he started playing the “Setaar” (a member of the lute family) with Maestro Pezhmanfar. He later continued his studies in Persian classical music and its various movements (radifs) as well as learning how to play “Taar” (another member of the lute family) with Maestro Dariush Talaei in 1998. The style of playing and teaching of this great Iranian music master encouraged him to conduct his own investigation into the different methods and styles of older master setar players. He is proud of his most recent apprenticeship under Maestro Mohammad Reza Lotfi. In the last few years he has been involved with the analysis and review of the music of Mirza Abdullah and other older Persian music pieces.
In addition to the above noted artists, he has benefited from the teachings of great masters such as Hooshang Zarif, Jalal Zolfonoon, Masud Shoari, Behdad Babai, and the late Mohsen Shams. He established and directed the “Nava Ensemble” in Shiraz that made performances in several cities in Iran, as well as Europe and Central Asian countries. He has been teaching his knowledge of music since he was 17 years old.
Nasim Gorgani was born in the Bay Area in 1987, raised in Tehran. After graduation from high school, returned to her place of birth. While going through early life experiences, she found spirituality as a way to become closer to the source of creation. Playing spiritual music, especially Daf, made her experience an extraordinary sense of peace and satisfaction missing in other activities. She was fortunate to have Vandad Massahzadeh as her instructor who encouraged her to continue studying music in college. She received her B.A. from SFSU in music with emphasis on world music and cultures in 2009. She has been studying choral music with David Xiques since 2008 and finds in an unexplainable sense of unity and completeness when performing choral music. She believes that when the soul consciously interacts with music, it feels like it is getting close to its source.
Shahin Gorgani, born in 1988 in California, spent his high school time in Iran where he became interested in Persian national music. At the age of 15, he along with his sister Nasim, started taking Daf classes with Vandad Massahzadeh. At 17, he met Mohammadreza Banaei who taught him Tombak for the first time. Meanwhile, Shahin continued taking Daf lessons with Hossein Rezaeiinia, a great Iranian Daf player who taught him Daf by all his heart and let Shahin to hear the elegant and magnificent message of Persian music. This was the time when Shahin began to feel tightly attached to music for ever. At the age of 19, Shahin returned to USA for his academic educations and became acquainted with Shahab Paranj. Shahab has made it possible for Shahin to improve his knowledge of music and develop a new and different insight into the philosophy of Persian music. Shahin feels grateful to all his teachers especially Tahmoures Pournazeri for giving him the opportunity to inspire his life with the sound of Persian music. Shahin is now studying Nutritional Sciences.
