Anita Amirrezvani’s story about the place of women in Islamic society in
17th century Iran has been sold to publishers in more than 30 countries and
was longlisted for the 2008 Orange Prize for Fiction in the UK. Part
historical fiction and part feminist treatise, Amirrezvani’s novel was
hailed by the Washington Post as “enduring and dynamic” while
Publisher’s Weekly raved about its “sumptuous imagery and a modern
sensibility.” Amirrezvani wrote the book while she was an arts writer
and dance critic at the San Jose Mercury News.
