"The Iran born singer Mahsa Vahdat has one of the most beautiful voices in the universe. So intense, so mystic, so passionate, it can express the deepest longing, sorrow and pain that exists." –LIRA Magazine
"Kitka's songs are hauntingly beautiful, simple, yet otherworldly. The rich sound these women produce resonates as if energized by the universe itself, as if it were calling all live beings and still matter into togetherness and unity." – San Francisco Chronicle
This special concert explores the many faces of love, expressed by powerful, resilient artists rooted in some of the world's most passionate women's vocal traditions.
Born in Tehran, Mahsa Vahdat was trained in classical Persian singing and regional Iranian folk music by master musicians. Her repertoire is inspired by centuries-old mystical and love poems by Hafez, Rumi, and Saadi, as well as by the words of contemporary Iranian poets reflecting on themes of our times.
After Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, public female singing was banned. To this day, female singers can only perform for authorized women-only audiences or alongside a male voice, and can never perform solo in public. Mahsa is an award-winning ambassador of Freemuse, the world's leading organization advocating for freedom of expression for musicians and composers. She has attracted global acclaim for her work on the CD Lullabies from the Axis of Evil, and her new solo album The Sun Will Rise.
Kitka's commitment to presenting traditional song as a living and evolving expressive art form has led to adventuresome collaborations with some of the world's most exciting indigenous musicians and contemporary composers, ranging from Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares to Meredith Monk. Now celebrating its 38th season, Kitka has shared the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation, and resonant strength of traditional Eastern European and Caucasian women's vocal music with audiences throughout America and around the world.
Tickets $25 in advance/$30 at the door. Advance reservations strongly recommended.
