Raving Iran follows Anoosh and Arash, central figures of Tehran’s underground techno scene. Tired of hiding from the police and their stagnating career, they organize one last techno rave under dangerous circumstances in the desert. Back in Tehran, they try to sell their illegally made music album. When Anoosh is arrested, the situation seems to be hopeless, until they receive a phone call from the biggest techno festival in the world. Upon their arrival in Switzerland, their euphoria quickly evaporates as they become aware of the gravity of their situation. The question is: will they stay or go back to Iran?

In contrast to the large-scale, multisite, and flow-oriented projects documenting the trajectories of today’s more than 65 million international refugees, this film series focuses on the portrayal of the individuals’ everyday life, both migrants and people who are about to be forced out of their country. Focusing on personal relationships and historical background, these documentaries explore the causes and consequences of international and global migration. A place-specific, historically contextualized narrative shows that the question whether to remain or to leave accompanies people well before and long after their eventual departure. The answer to that very personal question will depend on collective possibilities.

They call themselves Blade and Beard – two DJs who are making inroads with their own brand of melodic “deep house.” Illegal inroads, that is, as Anoosh and Arash live in Iran, where the moral police have banned all forms of techno or house music.
