The daf is an ancient percussive instrument that is an important part of Kurdish and Persian traditional and spiritual music. The sound of the daf produces highly complex and intricate sounds and rhythms, known for its intense trance like qualities.
Here in the Bay Area, lives one of the Ostads or masters/maestros of Persian music, especially percussion, Pezhham Akhavass, who is living here from Iran. Born in 1980 Pezhham started learning at the age of 5. With the support of his father, he has studied with some of the most prominent and masters of Persian music. Pezhham graduated with bachelor's degree in music from Sureh University of Tehran. He has traveled around the United States, Europe, Iran extensively with the most prominent Iranian musicians including the renowned vocalist Shahram Nazeri. Freshly off the 2010 Masters of Persian Music Tour with Hossein Alizadeh and Kayhan Kalhour, some of the most prominent and inspirational figures in Persian music today, Pezhham is excited to be teaching in the Bay Area and reaching out to new students here.
In this workshop, he will help guide you to the basic essentials of learning this ancient instrument, and leave you with a firm grasp of how to hold, handle and understand rhythm of the daf.
