This event kicks off Stanford University's symposium series on Art, Social Space and Public Discourse in Iran.
Introducing topics covered in the wider symposium, the event examines the history and development of coffeehouse painting and culture in Iran. Explore the differences in style and context of coffeehouse painting from traditional miniature painting and follow its progression into contemporary artistic practices.
Live Broadcast from Tehran:
Following the talk will be a special performance, Live Broadcast from Tomorrow, a live-stream from a coffeehouse in Tehran’s Darvaze Ghar district in which magnificent large-scale coffeehouse paintings will be the backdrop for a naqqali (oral storytelling) performance from the “Shahnameh” (“The Book of Kings”). In this unprecedented interactive experience, Samsung Hall at the Asian Art Museum will be transformed to include coffeehouse aesthetics, providing a space for guests to sit back and enjoy a traditional coffeehouse experience in Iran.
