Amir ElSaffar (trumpet) and Hafez Modirzadeh (tenor saxophone) weave through the tonal spectra of the Iraqi maqam, Persian dastgah, and contemporary jazz to explore new worlds of sound and new expressive modes of the human spirit.
Iraqi-American Amir ElSaffar is an accomplished jazz and classical trumpeter who has collaborated with artists such as Cecil Taylor, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, and Daniel Barenboim. ElSaffar won the 2001 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet competition.
Born in 1962 of an Iranian father and European-American mother, Modirzadeh grew up in France and the U.S., identifying strongly with African-American blues and jazz, in addition to the rich traditions of classical Iranian music. Today he is a renowned scholar in ethnomusicology whose writings have been published in numerous journals, as well as in his book The Chromodal Approach to Improvised Music (Spartan Books Press, 1996). Modirzadeh is the recipient of two NEA Jazz Fellowships and an Artist-in-Residence Grant from the California Arts Council.
