As the forth pillar of democracy, it’s crucial to protect the media and improve the quality of news reporting by creating and strengthening powerful institutions that can properly train and protect Iranian journalists while upholding freedom of speech and expression.
In this talk Mr. Memarian will discuss major challenges faced by the journalism community in Iran. From business models to legal infrastructure to the political environment and the culture of news consumption, the challenges that have been detrimental to the foundations of news reporting in Iran will be discussed.
About the Speaker:
Omid Memarian is a journalist and has contributed extensively to the Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency and the Daily Beast, and has published Op-Ed pieces in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Time.com, San Francisco Chronicle, Politico and OpenDemocracy. A World Peace Fellow at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (2007-2009), he is the recipient of a "Human Rights Defender Award” (2005), the highest honor given by the Human Rights Watch. As an analyst, he has appeared on MSNBC, NBC, BBC, and Aljazeera amongst others. Memarian is passionate about art and his own photos were included in an art book compilation, “The Great Recession” (2008), published by UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. He is also the editor of Sketches of Iran (2013), a collection of 40 cartoons and essays.
Mr. Memarian is currently Deputy Director at the Center for Human Rights in Iran. He has worked with civil society and media organizations in Iran and abroad for the past 18 years. Prior to emigrating to the US in 2005, he was the editor in chief of the Volunteer Across Quarterly, a pioneering Iranian magazine dedicated to civil society issues and worked for numerous publications such as Hayate-No, Shargh, Yase_No.
