MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING
Moderator:Dr.Cyrus Nakhshab
Topic:Cross-Cultural & Cross-Generational discussion on Iranian-Americans who live in the US
Speech:Mostly in ENGLISH
his month's program is a cross-cultural and cross-generational discussion on Iranian-Americans living in the US. The discussion is mediated by Dr. Nakhshab who is a Social psychologist.
*Have you ever felt out of place or confused about being an Iranian-American?
*Do you feel like you've had to compromise some of your values after immigrating to the US?
*Is it difficult to understand the behavior of your friends, your parents, or your kids?
*Do you feel pressure to only date or socialize with other Iranians?
*Have you been labeled a "FOB"?
The environment in which we are raised greatly impacts our life's goals and expectations. We are also shaped by our ethnic heritage and the wishes placed upon us by our friends and families. These different pressures are often at odds with one another, leading to discomfort, conflict and feelings of alienation.
This meeting brings together a panel of students with very different backgrounds to share their experiences and concerns. The panel is composed of students who were:
a) Born and raised in the US
b) Born in Iran, but moved to the US at an early age
c) Born and raised in Iran, but recently moved to the US
Each of these students bring a set of unique experiences, concerns and issues which we would like to explore.
Discussing these concerns and issues can provide a new perspective for everyone, and an opportunity to hear how others have dealt with similar situations and challenges.
Please join us for this event to listen and also share your own experiences as Iranian-Americans living in the USA today.
