Ensemble:
Network for New Music, which The Philadelphia Inquirer has called the city's "premier new music organization" presents passionate, meticulously rehearsed performances of music by emerging and established composers from the United States and abroad. The Network Ensemble is a flexible, 20-member group whose players also perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Since its inception in 1984, the Ensemble has presented more than 600 works and recorded 4 CDs for the Albany and Innova labels. Also committed to education, the Network Ensemble has worked with students from the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Swarthmore College; the Ensemble has held an ongoing residency at Haverford College since 2007.
Commissioning:
Network for New Music is one of the foremost commissioning organizations in the United States. During its 30-year history, the Ensemble has commissioned more than 100 works from leading composers including Sebastian Currier, Dai Fujikura, Michael Hersch, Lee Hyla, Steven Mackey, and Chen Yi as well as Pulitzer Prize winners John Harbison, Jennifer Higdon, Bernard Rands, Lewis Spratlan, Melinda Wagner, Richard Wernick, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Recently commissioned works have been reviewed in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Baltimore Sun.
In 2014, the Board of Directors established the Network for New Music Commissioning Fund, a permanent, ongoing reserve fund to support the creation of new works. Network for New Music is one of the first ensembles nationwide to maintain its own dedicated commissioning fund, ensuring that composer collaborations are a part of every concert season in Philadelphia.
