Opening Reception, March 1, 6-8 PM
Taking its title from the line of a 1950s feminist poem, Call To Arms by the late Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad, this exhibition investigates internal and external constructs of female identity in and outside Iran. The paintings and video installations by Mona Shomali (USA) and Haleh Jamali (UK) challenge both Eastern and Western notions about the subject, ‘unveiling’ femininity in the process.
A collaboration among innovative Iranian artists, Asian Arts Initiative’s multimedia exhibition That Person Who Is Your Creation: Iranian Women Exploring the Feminine Self (Feb. 19-April 26) challenges both Eastern and Western preconceived ideas about female identity. The exhibition, curated by Philadelphia arts event programmer Sara Zia Ebrahimi, uses a mixture of mediums from artists Mona Shomali and Haleh Jamali to address the question of what the true self is for immigrant women worldwide.
