Lecture by Dr. Kiumars Siah: “Some Notes on Translation of Poetry”
Kiumars Siah, was born in Kermanshah in 1957. After finishing his 10th grade, he moved to Shiraz to attend Pahlavi University High School and later Pahlavi (Shiraz) University. In 1980, he received his Bachelor of
Science degree in Civil Engineering from Pahlavi (Shiraz) University. In 1985, he moved to the U.S. to continue his studies. In 1987 and 1990, he received an M.S. and a Ph.D. Degree in Civil (Structural)
Engineering from Syracuse University. Since, 1990, Kiumars has been working as a licensed structural engineer in the United States. Currently, he lives with his Wife, Fariba, and their only son, Arash, in Hawaii.
When he is not working, Kiumars spends his time, studying literature, listening to or singing Persian music,
once in a while doing calligraphy, or translating poetry from English or Spanish to Persian. Presently, he is preparing the results of his two years of translation for publication of six pamphlets. Five of these pamphlets are selected poems of five poets and the most recent pamphlet includes translation of twenty-something most famous poems in English by twenty-something poets. In this program, the guest speaker, first briefly discusses three subjects of translation, poetry, and translation of poetry. Then, as an example, an English poem along with two corresponding translations in Persian are presented and further analyzed to elucidate the subject. At the conclusion of the lecture, the speaker will answer possible questions by the attendants.
