The final concert of Network’s 2018-19 SOUND DESIGNS season culminates in a Network commission, Air = Water, two movements for string quartet & Balinese gamelan, by cross-culturalist, Evan Ziporyn. Gerald Levinson’s exquisitely constructed Bronze Music (piano; 4 hands), composed in Bali, adds another exotic resonance to the program. John Adams’ Road Movies (violin & piano) inserts a subversive ‘swing’ into the mix while Hannah Lash’s C for vibraphone & piano returns us to the simplicity of the minimalist style. The Network Ensemble will also join select instrumentalists from the Philadelphia Sinfonia youth orchestra to perform Terry Riley’s minimalist masterpiece In C.
With guest artists from the Gamelan Semara Santi ensemble: Thomas Whitman, Founder and Co-Director; and Philadelphia Sinfonia youth orchestra: Gary White, Music Director and Conductor.
Pre-concert performance at 2:30 pm, featuring new works by SMS students of Michael Stambaugh.
