Spring is Coming! Get ready for the joyful warm seasons ahead by washing away all the sadness and darkness winter brought to you. How? It's simple; join the Oxford University Iranian Society, help yourself with tea and local Iranian Nibbles, enjoy fireworks and hopefully some music, jump over the Persian bonfire, and most importantly enjoy some good company!
ChaharShanbe Suri (meaning Wednesday feast) is the night before the last Wednesday of the Persian year. People of Persia gathered together at this night, to take the positive glow of the fire and wash away their bad feelings in order to get ready for the Persian New Year Celebration (Nowruz). They jumped over the fire singing:
"زردی من از تو، سرخی تو از من"
which is read
"Zardie man az to, Sorkhie to az man".
In this song, they asked fire to give them its red color (symbol of health and happiness) and take their pale yellow color.
