Arrives from Germany
KIYANA: VITAL AND PERPETUAL MOVEMENTS, led by
Javad Tehranian, will be giving a presentation and performance of traditional Persian mystical whirling dance at Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California in Oakland on Friday, October 16, followed by a two-day workshop on Sufi mystical whirling at the same center Saturday, October 17 through Sunday, October 18. Javad is an author and instructor in kiyana, a series of geometrical movements attuned to cosmic patterns and integrated with Sufi ecstatic sama’a dancing. Closely related to the whirling dervish dance derived from Rumi, kiyana employs rhythmic and polyrhythmic exercises that produce both contemplative equilibrium and mystical ecstasy.
About the Workshop:
Wear comfortable clothes and prepare for a three-hour intense dance and exercise workshop. Javad Tehranian teaches vital exercises, infinity respiration, eye exercises, and body discipline, as well as symmetric and asymmetric movements by the method of divided attention, inner development, rhythmical contemplative movements, and the enchanting, euphoric Sufi sama’a dance.
