American Express and the Queens Museum of Art present Passport Fridays 2009, the 5th season of the museum's annual outdoor summer festival of international music, dance and film. Set against the backdrop of beautiful Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the majestic Unisphere, Passport Fridays will take place on Friday evenings from July 10 through August 28, 6:30 - 10:30 pm. This year's journey around the globe begins in Colombia and includes stops in Mexico, Korea, Iran, Jordan, Bangladesh, Uganda, and Taiwan. Each evening begins with live dance and music performances followed by the feature film screening after sunset.
Persian Arts Festival is honored to co-present Passport Friday on August 14th!
6:30 pm Dance: Shooresh, an NYC-based Iranian women’s dance troupe, will perform and instruct the audience on Persian dance
7pm Music: A unique fusion of classical Persian poetry with contemporary jazz and blues, Iranian artist Rana Farhan sings in a cool bluesy style that transcends time and erases all borders, wowing listeners worldwide.
8pm Film: Persepolis (Vincent Parronaud & Marjane Satrapi, France/Iran, 2007, 96min, French, English, Farsi, and German with English ST, Animation). Marjane Satrapi grew up wearing sneakers, beating up boys, and aspired to be a prophet. When she was ten years old, her world changed overnight, with the Iranian revolution. Grownups around her began to disappear. Marjane has several close encounters with the country’s morality police and her teachers at school. When Iraqi bombs fall on the street where she lives, her parents send her abroad. This is an irreverent and heartbreaking true story of a childhood coinciding with regime change and war.
In Case of Rain, program moves inside of museum.
