Iran’s celebrated virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor will perform on the setar, his second instrument to the bowed kamancheh. The setar, which he has rarely played in concert, is a four-stringed lute with 25 movable frets, often associated with Sufism. He will be joined by Kiya Tabassian, his student of many years, for an evening of exquisite improvisations. Renowned for his many creative collaborations and compositions, Kalhor is an original member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and has collaborated with Brooklyn Rider, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Kronos Quartet, Osvaldo Golijov, Erdal Erzincan, and Shujaat Husain Khan, among others.
