This month, come hear contemporary Persian poetry by Sohrab Sepehri, H.E. Sayeh (Hushang Ebtehaj), Yadollah Royaee, and Roya Zarrin, translated and read by Jean Valentine, Fayre Makeig and Kaveh Bassiri!
Jean Valentine is author of eleven books, including, Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965 – 2003, winner of the 2004 National Book Award for Poetry. Break the Glass, her new collection, is forthcoming from Copper Canyon Books in 2010. She is the current New York State Poet Laureate and recipient of numerous awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA awards, Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, and Shelley Memorial Prize from The Poetry Society of America.
Fayre Makeig is a poet and translator whose work has appeared in the Western Humanities Review and is upcoming in Two Lines. In 2009 she won a Pen Translation Fund Grant for the selected free verse of contemporary Iranian poet Hoshang Ebtehaj. Fayre holds a BA in English from Yale University and is finishing work toward an MFA in writing at Columbia University. She lives with her husband, the sculptor Prem Makeig, in Brooklyn, NY. Past homes include Washington DC, Arizona, and Maharashtra, India.
Kaveh Bassiri is a writer and translator. He is co-founder of Triptych Readings, which presents established and emerging poets, and Literary Art Director for Persian Arts Festival. His writing won the Bellingham Review’s 49th Parallel Award and is forthcoming in Virginia Quarterly Review, Mississippi Review, Harpur Palate, Tusculum Review, and Atlanta Review.
