Joey Lawrence:
The Kurdish movement used fierce willpower and sophisticated political skills to overcome assimilation and genocide at the hands of terrorizing states & other enemies like ISIS. I am inspired by these incredible people as a photographer but also as an active observer of other endangered cultures and language groups across the globe. This book on the Kurdish struggle actually shares some commonalities with my past projects—the Mentawai of Indonesia and tribes of Ethiopia's Omo Valley. These populations find themselves restricted within the borders of a nation state they had little to no say in creating. The portrait photography became a driving force to explore this greater human narrative- an ethnic minority defending their distinct way of life against all odds. The theme of the book is when traditional clothing becomes a military uniform.
The book is first and foremost a photography book with more than 150 medium format portraits, but there are also 50 000 words of journals, maps and historical analysis. Because it was an independent and self-funded project, there were no constraints imposed on me.
