On exhibition at the Leila Taghinia-Milani Heller Gallery is the work of renowned photographer Iran Issa-Khan and painter Peter Wise. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Iran Issa-Khan was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer, having captured images of supermodels, international celebrities, and even former first lady Nancy Reagan. In more recent years she has turned her artistic focus from photographing fascinating people to taking pictures of the beauty we see all around us in nature. Living and working in southern Florida, Ms. Issa-Khan finds inspiration from her environment through single organic forms found in nature. Individual shells, corals, and flowers all in the subtle variations of white, are rendered in larger than life photographic prints that illuminate on the gallery walls. Her masterful use of light and skillful composition portrays the poetry of nature, evoking the individual beauty and power of the objects. Everything around us has life, and Iran Issa-Khan is showing us the life of nature through the earth, which has existed for millions of years and will continue to exist, long after we have passed. As an avid surfer, Peter Wise has taken his personal passion and transformed this high energy sport to paint through his Surf Paintings series of 54 works all produced between 2004 and 2008. The textured surface and high key color emphases the excitement of the “hitting surf” in an intimate but compelling cycle. Each diminutive work reenacts the various defining moments of man against nature and his chance to surmount it. This remarkable and ambitious series has been collected in a book published by Glitterati Incorporated with a preface by S.C. Gwynne and essays by fellow friends and surfers. The book will be available for purchase at the opening along with a limited artist’s edition. Peter Wise was born in Boston and educated at Amherst College and later at the New York Studio School, where he studied under Mercedes Matter and Paul Georges. His work is found in various public and private collections, including Mead Art Gallery, Amherst College, Estee Lauder Corporate Collection, and has been shown at The Drawing Center, New York. He currently resides in New York City.
