Since diplomatic relations were severed in 1980, the U.S.–Iran relationship has faced a towering legacy of mistrust, conflict and missteps. Recent developments, including allegations of an assassination plot targeting Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States and suspicions of secret work by Tehran on nuclear arms, have brought the long embattled relationship to a potential breaking point. The evening will explore key issues of significance to Washington and Tehran, including Iran’s nuclear program, domestic politics and upcoming elections in both countries, and regional security matters related to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the sweeping changes underway in the Arab world.
Ambassador Hossein Mousavian, who served as Iran’s former lead nuclear negotiator (2003-2005) and Ambassador to Germany (1990-1997), and Ambassador Thomas Pickering, who held a range of ambassadorial-level posts and served as U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs (1997-2000), will be on-hand to lend political insights gained from decades of experience working on these issues at the highest levels of government. At a time when the current confrontational course is increasingly treacherous, the conversation will explore how to set a path toward engagement despite all the problems that exist.
