Professor and best-selling author Gina Nahai tells the story L.A.'s Iranian Jewish community — what they were and have become.
Sharing readings from her latest book in progress, The Pearl Canon, Professor Nahai begins her narration of this unique community in the East and ends in the West, exploring a people who live simultaneously in the age of modern science and in the world of ancient myth, who realize that truth has many shades, some visible to the Western eye and others not.
Three times over the course of their 5,000-year history, the Mizrahi Jews of Iran have been forced into exile. The first was after the destruction of the First Temple; the second was in the wake of the Muslim conquest of Persia; the third was an escape from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Learn how a community of nearly 50,000 Jews, forced overnight into exile, rebuilt its ancestral homeland a continent away from home.
The lecture will be followed by a book signing.
Admission, free. Parking, $8.
