UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema.
In person: filmmaker Morteza Farshbaf!
'Mourning' (2011): A young boy accompanies his aunt and uncle on a road trip, during which they secretly discuss whether to tell him his parents have died in a traffic accident. Their exchanges reveal a degree of dysfunction—a recurring feature of contemporary Iranian film—but also, heartrending moments in which compassion falteringly asserts itself. A beautiful and humanistic tale, the film is an impressive debut by filmmaker Morteza Farshbaf.
