Omar Khayyam was a polymath, scientist, philosopher, and poet of the 11th century. His mathematical genius in unifying algebra and geometry transcended his time. His philosophical work laid the grounds for Existentialism, and helps each person to define life as a sequence of free choices that elevates her or him from a passive agent floating in the universe, or flowing through the predefined funnels of religion, to a conscious being defining her or his place in the universe and even shaping its future. To blunt the cutting edge of his thoughts, Khayyam employed poetry that resulted in Rubā‘iyyāt (quatrains). This enlightening collection was introduced to the western world by the English poet Edward FitzGerald in the 18th century.
Since Covid, the Kurdish Iranian-American artist, Hiwa Pashaei, has taken refuge under the tent-maker’s roof of principled stability. He looks at life through Khayyam’s lens of poetic optimism. Hiwa has translated the essence of Khayyam’s Rubā‘iyyāt into the color of ribbon on net and the shape of Nastaliq (calligraphy). This has resulted in 15 pieces, sized from 48 . 60” to 140 . 120”, that will be showcased in this exhibition.
