Professor Pierre Briant was born in Angers, western France. He is a French Iranologist and Professor of History and Civilization of the Achaemenid World at the Collège de France since 1999. Pierre Briant has published widely on the history of the Persian Empire and its different aspects. He is the editor of a series of publications named Persika devoted to the study of the Achaemenid civilization in its totality. Pierre Briant has been the driving force behind a generation of different scholars who are now members of a common intellectual project for great cause: the History of the Achaemenid Empire. He also initiated the important website; www.achement.com including an Achaemenid virtual museum.
Pierre Briant is the author of the book: De Cyrus à Alexandre. Histoire de l’empire perse, Paris, 1996, translated into English: From Cyrus to Alexander. A History of the Persian Empire, Winona Lake, Indiana, 2001.
His recent book on Darius III (Darius III dans l’ombre d’Alexandre, Paris, 2003), sheds a new light on the less known last king of the Achaemenid Empire confronting the Macedonian invasion.
Pierre Briant has taught as a guest professor at the University of Chicago, where he received an honorary doctorate , University of Padua, Italy, University of Pisa, Italy, and lectured in a number of prestigious institutions in North America and Europe.
