A terrible family secret haunts several generations of women. As punishment for some unspecified act that has brought shame on the family, a father chases his daughter around the cellar, catches her, and orders his young son to kill her. They bury her under the stone floor of the cellar of the family house. Years later, the daughter of the now grown up son is desperate to avoid an arranged marriage with a much older man. The film charts the legacy of patriarchal violence across further generations of the same Tehran household, with a series of single-act scenes taking place in 1946, 1966 and 1996. The stagy structure allows director Kianoush Ayari to compare shifting social attitudes while drawing attention to key continuities. This masterfully filmed drama, a strong attack on patriarchal authority, was banned for two years by the Iranian government.
