The first of two screenings to mark the Persian New Year, The White Balloon is the first film directed by Jafar Panahi, and the winner of the Camera D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995.
The White Balloon is set on the eve of the Persian New Year and is the story of a young girl’s desire to buy a new goldfish for the festivities, as she thinks the one’s in their pond at home are too skinny. The film is a real time telling of her journey through the streets of Tehran and the people she encounters, including a young Afghan balloon seller.

Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been subject to house arrest and is still serving a 20 year ban on making films. He continues to make films and has completed three since the ban was imposed. Panahi’s most recent film Tehran Taxi won the Golden Bear at last year’s Berlinale.
