The Mayor has announced plans to host the first ever Newroz festival in Trafalgar Square on Saturday 14th March 2009.
Newroz is the traditional New Year festival celebrated by Turks, Kurds, Iranians, Iraqis and other communities across the Middle East and Central Asia. The festival is organised by Halkevi Kurdish and Turkish Community Centre in partnership with the Mayor of London, and other Kurdish and Turkish groups in London.
The Mayor said: “I have the pleasure to announce that a Newroz Festival will take place for the first time on Trafalgar Square on Saturday 14 March. I’m proud so many people of Turkish and Kurdish backgrounds, like my paternal grandfather, have made London their home and have brought the rich history, culture, cuisine and trades of Turkish speaking communities to the capital.
“Newroz is a fantastic opportunity for all Londoners to enjoy a festival that traditionally welcomes the Spring. I am proud to be the Mayor for Londoners from every community and I’m extremely proud of my ancestry. This is a wonderful opportunity for strengthening the links that exist between City Hall and everyone marking Newroz.
“There are an abundance of Newroz activities planned across the city and the Trafalgar Square festival will no doubt attract crowds in great numbers.
“Happy Newroz! ”
At the festival there will be live music and dance, cultural food and stalls. Live performances at the event will include singers Ferhat Tunc, Hesen Serif, Heme Heci and the band Carnewa. Rapper Serhado Serbian will perform plus folk dance groups Govenda Asiti (Dance of Peace) and Azadiya Perperok (Free Butterly).
