Based on a true story, the film opens with a woman describing the stoning to death of her niece Soraya to a French journalist who has been stranded in a remote Iranian village.
When Soraya refuses to grant her husband a divorce, he involves local community leaders and a town all too easily led down a path of deceit, coercion, and hysteria in his quest to rid himself of his unwanted wife. The women, stripped of all rights and without recourse, confront the men in power who use and abuse their authority to condemn Soyaya, an innocent but inconvenient wife, to an unjust and torturous death.
Free of charge
A shocking expose of the dark power of mob rule, uncivil law, and the lack of human rights still experienced by women in Iran. The film will be followed by a discussion and Q&A.
