All living organisms share one pivotal feature in their essence: DNA, the code of life. From miniscule organisms like bacteria to large mammals like us, all characteristics and body functions are controlled by a chain of molecules known as DNA. Prior to the identification of DNA and genes, in 1859 Charles Darwin wrote an article, titled “The Origin of Species”, where he proposed the idea that all living organisms may have originated from a single common ancestor and the plethora of organisms present today are the result of descent plus modification. In this two-part lecture presented here, we will discuss how genes govern the outcome of organism characteristics, explain Darwin’s theory from a genetic perspective, examine the common misconceptions about evolution and finally the relation of evolution to the narrative of Holy Scriptures.
