Forced into Unbeing:
You are invited to join us for a thought provoking evening with a panel event and discussion addressing the human rights implications that exist for families seeking justice for the disappeared in Turkey and Iran.
This event will address the long-term struggle for truth and justice for the victims of enforced disappearances and secret executions in the Islamic Republic of Iran and in the context of the Kurdish population of Turkey. Examining the plight of the families of the victims in both countries, the evening's discussion will consider the gender perspective to the problem, and will also look into the underground map of mass graves in Iran. The families who have been fighting to seek justice for victims of these past crimes will tell their stories.
Karen Bennett, Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Human Rights and Social Justice Research Institute at London Metropolitan University, will welcome and introduce the event with the viewing of a short film.
Chairing the event is Prof. Bill Bowring, Professor of International Law at Birkbeck College.
The keynote speaker of the event is Henrikas Mickevičius, member of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.
Panel speakers include:
Shadi Sadr, a human rights lawyer with Justice for Iran, an NGO based in London, speaking on 1988 massacre and mass graves in Iran.
Özlem Kaya, an activist with NGO Hafıza Merkezi, speaking on the situation in Turkey and gender aspects of the disappeared.
Two speakers from the families of the disappeared will tell their stories, including Chowra Makaremi, a researcher based at Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les enjeux sociaux in Paris.
The evening will conclude with a plenary discussion and networking reception.
Registration is free but donations would be welcome.
