The Wedlock - Feature Film
Iran / 2013/ dir. Rouhollah Hejazi / Persian with English subtitles/ Start Time: 15:30
Mansoor and Mohadeseh and their fourteen-year-old daughter, Negin, appear to be a normal urban family, living by traditional values, in contemprary Iran. However, after Mohadeseh's trendy niece and her husband arrive in a blur of fast cars, cigarettes and Western music to remodel their dated house, the family's domestic stability is thrown into chaos. The young couple's modern ideas on relationships, gender and designs for the house soon lead to conflict and threaten to lead Negin astray. Gradually, however, it is revealed that nobody is quite as they seem, and both couples must confront the secrets and shames that have been lingering under the surface of their marriages. Thoughtful, compelling and slickly shot,'The Wedlock' is an exquisite and subtle exploration of marriage in today's Iran, which manages to reflect upon themes of faith, family, women's rights and Westernisation without forcing its own political agenda.
Don't Be Tired - Feature Film
Iran / 2012/ dir. Mohsen Gharaei / Persian and English with subtitles/ Start Time: 17:30
Maryam, having left Iran for Canada with her family at the age of five, returns to her homeland for the benefit of Roman, her carefree geologist husband. Instigated by adventure seeking Roman, an impromptu road trip ensues, led by childlike and cheerful Morteza. Reluctantly Maryam joins, as does Hossein, the brooding cousin of Morteza. The unlikely foursome set off in an old VW style camper van across the Iranian desert in search of the Kalut. An unlucky course of events means the four are forced to stay at the home of the hospitable Miss Hakim where an unlikely bond develops between Hossein and Maryam. Comical dialogue, as a result of misunderstandings in language, provides light relief, as do the blue haze of the sky and the sand coloured rocks of the desert that softly colour the film. What was intended as a sightseeing jaunt leads to an unexpected personal journey that reignites a lust for life and living
