Iranian-American Clients
The Iranian-American population in the United States is a rapidly growing minority group with challenges that derive not only from acculturation difficulties in this country, but also from the conditions under which they left their native country. Many Iranian cultural values are sharply at odds with American ideas, and members of this group face prejudice here as a result of current and historical tensions between Iran and the U.S. For example, issues such as a communication style that discourages self-expression, family life that has been described as “enmeshed”, and gender roles which subordinate women require not only a high level of cultural sensitivity, but the putting aside of assumptions which can interfere with the establishment of a safe environment for these clients. Certain attitudes and beliefs about mental illness and mental health care can also make this population reluctant to seek mental health assistance and resistant to accepting it once in therapy. Therapists working with these clients must be aware of how Iranian culture informs identity, self-presentation and presenting problems, and consequently must adapt traditional Western techniques of dialogue, assessment, and treatment planning, as well as choosing the appropriate treatment models.
