Ustad Farida Mahwash is the legendary singer and voice of Afghanistan. She was the first woman to have been conferred the honorary title of “Ustad”, meaning Master in Dari. She currently lives in Fremont. She has performed around the Bay Area, including UC Berkeley and Stanford, and the United Nations.
Mahwash remains an exalted figure in her homeland, particularly among those who remember her songs that were constantly played on the radio. She is the Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand of South Asia.
