ran made headline news last June when supporters of opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Moussavi challenged President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s proclaimed landslide victory. This development, though, was only the next step in a long history of complex dynamics in Iran. The numerous youth of the country’s population play a key role in Iran’s thriving popular culture, where online social media and modern technologies expanded the reach of the post-election demonstrations. Following these reactions from its citizens, Iran faces many geopolitical concerns as a key regional actor, a potential nuclear power and one of OPEC’s largest oil exporters. Because of Iran’s strategic position and America’s past intervention in the country’s domestic interests, U.S. leaders must choose their words carefully in responding to the current political climate. In a presentation entitled “Iran: Historic Crossroads,” Darab Ganji will assess Iran’s predicament by drawing on his experience leading up to its 1979 revolution.
Darab Ganji joined Best Associates after serving as president of World Edge LLC, a global consulting firm. He has also served as vice president of business development and international director of the Petro-Hunt Group. He lived in Iran for 14 years before the 1979 revolution. Ganji is a board member of DCFR as well as a board member and guest lecturer at SMU's John G. Tower Center for Political Studies.
