Majid Majidi, 1997
A poor boy loses his sister’s shoes, and spends the rest of the film trying to make it up to her. Like many films from the Iranian neo-realist scene, the small scale of the subject belies the magnitude of the emotions conveyed. While the setting of urban poverty in Tehran is pervasive, Majidi retains a belief in the power of innocence and righteous struggle that acts as a metaphor for life in the city and humanity while also critiquing social inequalities. Majidi's mixture of empathy and moral purity has made him one of the most successful post-Islamic revolution art film directors. 35mm
