Lecture by Friederike Voigt, the Senior Curator of the Middle East & South Asia Department of World Cultures in the National Museums Scotland.
This lecture will give an overview of tilework in Iranian architecture, an art form which makes use of geometric, floral and figurative patterns as well as inscriptions. In particular, the lecture will focus on figurative painted tiles, which emerged as the favoured means of symbolic expression under the Qajar dynasty in the 19th century.
