The exhibition Reminders of Home: Persian Art Connecting Homeland and Diaspora will be on display August 22 to December 8, 2018 at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A free public reception celebrating the exhibition will take place on September 21, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the FedEx Global Education Center.
Welcoming remarks by Carl Ernst, William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies and co-director of the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations, and Katie Ziglar, director of the Ackland Art Museum. Sepideh Saeedi, board member of the Iranian Cultural Society of North Carolina, will provide introductory remarks.
The reception will feature a performance, Folk Music of Iran, directed by Bahram Osqueezadeh, professor in the Department of Music at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Osqueezadeh is a musician and scholar whose areas of expertise range from professional performance to composition to ethnomusicology. His compositions include chamber and orchestral music as well as electronic and computer-generated works. He is recently focused on multi-cultural music, with emphasis on cross-cultural composition methods between Iranian music and Western-European classical music.
Mitra Khorsandi will be the featured vocalist. The musical ensemble includes Bahram Dehghani, ney; Siamak Bozorgi, tar bass; Nadia Sabet, percussion; and Bahram Osqueezadeh, santur.
The performance will be followed by a reception in the Florence and James Peacock Atrium.
This event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the McCauley Deck underneath the FedEx Global Education Center starting at 5 p.m.
