The Third Line presents works by Mahmoud Bakhshi, Shahab Fotouhi, Arash Hanaei, Mamali Shafahi and Vahid Sharifian that illustrate their individual responses towards how Iran’s politics and policies dominate the world’s perception of the country through a diverse selection of media.
How to be ‘Iranian’ without being it; that is the underlying question the artists in I. U. [Heart] attempt to answer in their works. Does an artists’ origin or political view determine the basis of their work? Do international governments influence views on what artists should create? Is inspiration stemmed from the global policies between Iran and the United States? This, a breakdown on the relationship of the two countries, gives this exhibition its name: ‘I’ as in Iran, ‘U’ as in US, results in a reversal connotation of the affectionate term, ‘I love you’. This exhibition encased and inspired by globalisation and ambiguity, aims to identify the interaction between Iran and the US, Iranians in the US and Iranians in Iran. Through pop culture, socio-political references and a variety of media, I. U. [Heart] investigates the broader and more complex interactions between artists, history and identity.
