Iranian Cinema: Close-up
Close-up, a fiction-documentary hybrid, uses a sensational real-life event—the arrest of a young man on charges that he fraudulently impersonated the well-known Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf—as the basis for a stunning, multilayered investigation into movies, identity, artistic creation, and the nature of existence, in which the real people from the case portray themselves on screen. With its universal themes and fascinating, unpredictable narrative knots, Close-up has resonated with viewers around the world and paved the way for the torrent of exciting Iranian cinema that followed. In Persian with English subtitles. (98 min.) Presented in conjunction with the DIA special exhibition Shirin Neshat, opening April 7th, 2013.
